Embrace Legal Protections
It does not matter where your creative soul takes you. Whether you’re a musician, actor, dancer, fine artist, juggler, you’ve chosen a path you love!! You are passionate and excited about the possibilities of what lies ahead.
You have embarked on a career that is a business. A business that includes contracts that more often than not are filled with the proverbial legal “small print” and more often than not legal complexities that will not only affect the project at hand but your future career choices.
There is no getting around it, and you can’t shy away from dealing with contracts and agreements, which is why in this and upcoming articles we will face the legal issues of our life straight on, so when you are handed a contract, you are not dreading dealing with it, but you are excited as you are one step closer to entering an aggreement that will pay you for your creativity.
Embrace every legal question, contract and agreement that comes your way. Look at each agreement as an amour that when done right will become a shield that serves all parties.
Alight, alright I am getting a bit carried away here. Let’s just say at the very least you are entering into the agreement with your eyes wide open.

This is why it is essential to:
-
-
-
-
- Read every contract.
- Hire an attorney who will answer all your legal questions.
-
-
-

-
-
-
-
-
- Make sure you are happy with the agreement before signing.
- Ask yourself, can I live up to this?
- Do I want to live with this?
- Learn how to negotiate.
- Never be afraid to say no. The more you practice saying no, for the right reasons, the easier it will be.

Contracts protect You - All parties
The more you read a contract, the easier it will become and the more empowered you will be about your career. The more you understand the terms of your agreement— the more difficult it will be for anyone to take advantage of you.
I will never forget when I signed a contract to rent a theater. I read the contract several times and I asked all kinds of questions. I also had parts of the contract removed. When I heard the phrase “trust me” my response was then let’s just cross this out since you will not be executing that portion of the contract anyway. Had I not read the contract I would have agreed to terms that did not work with my production.

In addition to you reading the contract and asking questions, have an attorey review the contract. An attorney will have questions you would not think to ask.
Afraid to Ask Questions

I also remember being afraid of asking too many questions, thinking I was being annoying or afraid I would lose the opportunity. Those moments, when I allowed my fear to get the best

of me I could have simply said; “Explain it to me like I’m a six year old.”
Budget vs High End
Even if you can afford a high-end attorney, you want to be able to ask intelligent questions and if you are budget conscious and need to keep your eye on the clock asking those intelligent questions will save you time.
Never be afraid of a contract, be afraid of not understanding the contract.
An attorney friend of mine always said that at the beginning everyone is excited, but when disagreements arise and they will, the contract is there to protect you. I always loved this line, “what does the contract say?” You are held to the agreement and so is the other party, make sure your voice is heard.

Contracts for Your Career Goals

Queen Latifah
As Queen Latifah was making her mark on Hollywood, there was one film that inspired her to add a clause to her film contracts for the betterment of her career. After making the movie “Set It Off,” in which her character had an epic death scene toward the end, Queen Latifah decided she’d had enough of dying in movies.

Implementing Your New Insights
Ready to Take the Next Step? Here’s How!
Are you now feeling more confident about making sure you ask questions and appreciate the power of contracts?
Here are three action steps you can take to better equip yourself.

Think about your career and make a wish list of
everything you would like to have in all of your future contracts.
Read, study and practice negotiating techniques.
Read all contracts—highlight, research, and ask questions
regarding anything you do not understand.
Keep in mind you never know what the answer may be unless you ask.
Needless to say always be reasonable, you don’t want to ask for the moon when you know in your heart it is not a reasonable request. Trust your instincts.

Entertainers Life Recommendations
I am thrilled to share with you a number of options I have used to find an attorney I could trust to review my contracts.

The first is my favorite, and I have enjoyed using this service so much that I became an assosciate, because I knew this would be invaluable to Entertainers I am happy to share it here. The organization is called:
Legal Shield is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. If you are a US resident it is invaluable. I have enjoyed having contracts read in Virgina, Las Vegas and other states.
All attorneys are martindale hubble rated, which means you get a high end attorney for a nominal monthly fee. This is availalbe, because as a member your money is pooled with thousands of other members that allows Legal Shield to attract the best attorneys for their membership.
Click here to find out more about Legal Shield.
If it is challenging for you to pay the monthly membership fee or if you are outside the United States, reach out to organizations that offer pro bono legal services.

Pro Bono is a Latin term that means “for the public good.” This usually means that an attorney who works with you on a pro bono basis will not charge you for their services.
If they must charge you, the attorney may place you under a retainer, it would nornally be for a very nominal amount, anywhere from $1.00 to $5.00 US or similar amount in your country.
The best way to find Pro Bono legal advise is through contacts with colleagues who may know an attorney, a family contact, an organization that offers these services, a law school that may have a pro bono clinic, an arts organization that and also please contact your union.
As with everything, not all services are alike so please do your research and ask for recommendations.
If you wish to hire an attorney I strongly recommend asking your friends and colleagues for recommendations. Find out who has worked on a similar project and ask your friends and colleagues what they thought about their services.
Finally, searching the web and reading reviews is another avenue to find an attorney.
Always keep in mind that proper legal advise is there to help you.
