Celebrating Gioia De Cari: A Multi-Talented Entertainer
When we look at our friendships and the gifts they give to us, it is a joy to introduce you to my friend, Gioia De Cari and share with you the many gifts she gives to us.
Gioia, is a multi-talented Entertainer, actress, singer, playwright, and in her own words a “recovering mathematician”, she is a graduate of MIT.
So of course, when she recommends anything, I know it is special. After a wonderful conversation, where I was getting her thoughts about Entertainers Life and the recommendations I wanted to include, she immediately suggested:
Daily Rituals: Women at work
After our call and when I began writing this post that would feature this book, the idea of creating a Featured Entertainer section was born. Since it was inspired by my conversation with Gioia, I had to ask her to be our inaugural Featured Entertainer and of course thrilled that she said yes. We immediately scheduled an interview to have a more in-depth conversation about Daily Rituals: Women at Work by Mason Currey.
Now you may be the type of reader who loves to sit back and get cozy with your favorite drink, or you may read sections on the go, whatever way works best, you are going to enjoy reading Gioia’s thoughts about Daily Rituals: Women at Work with the added treat of meeting Gioia and learning more about her amazing career.

Why Daily Rituals: Women at Work
Gioia’s introduction to Mason Currey was through the author’s book Daily Rituals: How Artists Work. She found that although the book did not have many women in it, she thought the book was great and enjoyed reading it.
Then when she saw that Mason Currey wrote a book that featured women her response was; “Oh, that’s it. That’s my book.”
She also mentions that Mason sort of made a bit of an apology at the beginning. Clearly acknowledging the absence of women in his previous book.
He discovered that the artists he featured in his book Daily Rituals: How Artists Work were mostly men who usually had somebody behind the scenes—often a partner who took care of the domestic parts of life giving the artist quality time to spend on their art—a luxury Currey soon found that women usually did not have and therefore had a harder time with their creative pursuits.
Gioia felt from Mason Currey’s introduction that a book dedicated to women was important for him to write.
A book about Daily Rituals featuring women and their working process was a book Gioia knew she would enjoy, because she loves process.
Here are some thoughts Gioia shared about the book, and about process.
I like Process

Art involves both process and product, and I’m especially interested in process in art.
You go through a process when you create. For example, you go through a process of creating a character when you’re going to be on stage in a show. After the rehearsals, finally, once you open the show, your character is a kind of product. It may evolve as you continue performing it, but there is a sense of completion.
In writing, you show up at the empty page and write on some regular basis, and eventually you have a play, script or a book, which is the product. The process is the rehearsal, or the showing up every day and writing. That is the part that brings me the most joy.
I love to delve into process and the act of creating and iterating on the work in process.
I often meet artists who are more interested in the product. They want the product done, looking forward to opening night and the red carpet and all the things that happen at the end. I like the beginning part. For me, I’m captivated most by the joy of creation, the joy of it all coming together day-by-day.

My Voice

I didn’t read it to get ideas for my own process, I read it more for inspiration. I’ve learned over the years that one must find one’s own process. You need to find what really opens your creativity. It might be totally different than what anybody else does, and that’s okay. What your job is, is to be in touch enough with your intuition to know what is going to bring out your own best work.
Honor Process
For example, I sometimes meet people who are not artists who don’t realize how much practice is necessary to be a great artist. They seem to think that, if you’re an excellent pianist, say, you just have a knack to play brilliantly every time you sit down at the piano.
Of course that’s not the way it is. You know, if you want to get to Carnegie Hall you better practice! Right? Practice is process. So Curry’s book comforted me in that it elevates process in the eyes of everyone who might read it; it makes process known and important.
